We still weren’t done with dragons. The sequences of folds in the strips of paper were equally fascinating and we felt compelled to represent those too. First came a series of three scarves with stripes showing where the folds would be in the paper. Inwards folds were one colour, outwards folds another. Each scarf represented a different number of folds. The scarves have the magical property that when you fold them in half again and again, the colours alternate as the stripes pile up on top of each other. We weren’t satisfied with three strips so the wall-hanging Chromatic Scale showed the folds of seven different strips.

In the the bottom section of the hanging you can see a single orange line, representing an inward (valley) fold. In the section above there are two orange lines representing inwards folds and one cream line representing an outward (mountain fold). By the time you reach the top row there are 127 folds.

Previous afghans had been dual-purpose as blankets or wall-hangings. This one needed to always be seen flat to understand what it was trying to convey. It was made in a silky ribbon with textured yarn for the stripes. Matching beads were added to the lower edge.
